Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has approved a new salary structure for academic and non academic staff of Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, and Northwest University, Kano.
The new remuneration package, which is based on the salary structure recently introduced by the Federal Government for staff of federal universities, will take effect from January 2026, with payment scheduled to begin in September.
The governor’s spokesperson, Sunusi Bature Dawakin Tofa, announced the approval in a statement on Monday.
According to the statement, the decision followed recommendations by a committee constituted by the State Executive Council to review requests from the two universities for the adoption of the new salary structure.
The implementation is expected to cost the Kano State Government about N391.85 million monthly and N4.70 billion annually for the two institutions.
At Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, the monthly financial implication stands at N228.20 million. Of this amount, N141.08 million is earmarked for academic staff covered by the Academic Staff Union of Universities agreement, while N87.11 million is allocated to non academic staff under the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities.
For Northwest University, the government said the new salary structure would require N163.65 million monthly, comprising N112.24 million for academic staff and N51.41 million for non academic personnel.
The government has also approved the inclusion of N1.57 billion in the state’s 2026 Supplementary Budget to cover salary payments from September to December.
It added that arrears estimated at N3.13 billion, covering the period from January to August 2026, would be provided for in the 2027 Budget.
The committee said the salary review was designed to promote industrial harmony, improve staff welfare and bring the two universities in line with the remuneration structure applicable to federal and other state owned universities.
In a related development, Governor Yusuf approved the consideration of visitation panels for the two universities and other tertiary institutions across the state.
The government said the panels would strengthen accountability, administration and effective management of the institutions in accordance with relevant laws.
Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to improving workers’ welfare and strengthening the quality of higher education, describing investment in human capital as a key component of the state’s development agenda.
