The Kano State House of Assembly has initiated impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Aminu Abdulsalam over alleged misconduct, abuse of office, and breach of public trust.
The impeachment notice was presented on Thursday by the Majority Leader, Lawan Dala, and read by Speaker Ismail Falgore during plenary. The lawmakers cited Section 188 of the 1999 Constitution, which allows a state legislature to remove a deputy governor accused of gross misconduct.
Dala accused Abdulsalam of financial impropriety, abuse of office, and breach of public trust during his tenure as commissioner for local government, stating that “the misuse of official capacity to confer undue advantage constitutes abuse of power and is contrary to the obligations of public office.”
Thirty-eight lawmakers signed the impeachment notice, and Speaker Falgore has directed that Abdulsalam be formally served in accordance with constitutional procedures.
The move comes amid political tensions in Kano following Governor Abba Yusuf’s defection from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) last year. Abdulsalam had chosen to remain with the NNPP, reportedly intensifying rifts within the state government and fueling speculation about his political future.
The impeachment proceedings are set to follow the constitutionally mandated process, with further developments expected in the coming weeks.
