The Abia State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has said that former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan has the constitutional right to contest for the presidency in 2027, provided he follows due process and the party’s guidelines.
Speaking in Umuahia on Tuesday, the state PDP chairman, Elder Abraham Amah, clarified the party’s position while addressing speculations about Jonathan’s possible interest in the presidential race.
“The attention of the Abia State chapter of the PDP has been drawn to speculations and inquiries regarding the possible interest of former President Goodluck Jonathan in contesting the presidential ticket of our great party in the forthcoming general elections. Jonathan has the right to contest,” Amah said.
He stressed that the party’s presidential flagbearer would be chosen through a free, fair, transparent, and democratic convention, not through personal preferences or unilateral endorsements.
“As a former President and respected leader of the party, Dr. Jonathan enjoys the constitutional right to contest for the ticket if he so desires. The PDP remains an open, inclusive platform where every eligible member is free to aspire to any office in line with party guidelines and the provisions of the Nigerian Constitution,” Amah added.
The Abia PDP chairman noted that while some influential groups within the party believe Jonathan is well-positioned to give the PDP strong national representation, the final decision rests with delegates at the convention.
He explained that Jonathan is yet to formally engage the Abia PDP with his vision or manifesto, but emphasized that the chapter’s doors remain open to him and other aspirants.
“Our doors are open to all aspirants. Until such a time when all aspirants present their plans and the convention decides, the Abia PDP remains neutral. We reaffirm our commitment to internal democracy, equity, and fairness as we prepare for a credible and transparent presidential convention,” Amah said.
