The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced September 19, 2026, as the date for the conduct of five by-elections across four states in Nigeria.
The elections will take place in Gombe, Kano, Bauchi and Delta states and will cover one federal constituency and four state constituencies.
According to the commission, the federal constituency election will be held in the Gombe/Kwami/Funakaye Federal Constituency of Gombe State.
Four state constituency elections will also be conducted in different parts of the country. These include the Disina and Sakwa State Constituencies in Bauchi State, the Udu State Constituency in Delta State, and the Dawakin Kudu State Constituency in Kano State.
The information was disclosed by the Chief Press Secretary to the INEC Chairman, Tunde Oketola, in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja.
Oketola confirmed that preparations were underway for the five elections scheduled for September 19.
The forthcoming polls are expected to provide eligible voters in the affected constituencies with an opportunity to elect new representatives following vacancies in the respective legislative seats.
INEC’s announcement marks the beginning of preparations by political parties, candidates and other stakeholders for the contests.
The commission is expected to provide further details concerning the electoral timetable and other arrangements as preparations for the by-elections progress.
