The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nandap, has ordered the suspension of commanding officers along the Lagos-Seme border corridor following allegations of extortion by personnel.
The decision comes in response to viral online reports accusing officers stationed at the border of engaging in unethical practices. Nandap also directed an immediate investigation into the incidents to identify those involved and enforce disciplinary measures.
In a statement issued by the Service’s Public Relations Officer, Akinsola Akinlabi, the Comptroller-General condemned the alleged conduct, describing it as a violation of the agency’s core values and professional standards.
The statement did not disclose the number of officers affected but stressed that all individuals found culpable would face prompt disciplinary action.
The Lagos-Seme corridor, which connects Nigeria to the Republic of Benin, remains one of the busiest and most strategic border routes in West Africa, facilitating the movement of goods, traders, and travellers.
The route has, however, been a recurring hotspot for complaints of harassment and extortion by security personnel. Recent online videos and reports have once again drawn attention to the issue, prompting swift action from the immigration authorities.
Nandap reiterated her commitment to discipline, transparency, and accountability within the service, noting that her administration would not tolerate actions that undermine public trust.
The Service also urged members of the public to report cases of misconduct through its official communication channels, assuring that appropriate action would be taken.
It reaffirmed its commitment to providing professional and efficient services while ensuring integrity in the management of Nigeria’s borders.
