The Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has inaugurated an eight-member committee to oversee the implementation of state policing and unveil a new policing vision following his confirmation as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police.
Disu held his first formal meeting with senior officers on Wednesday, shortly after the Nigeria Police Council ratified his appointment and ahead of his swearing-in by President Bola Tinubu at the Presidential Villa.
Addressing the top hierarchy of the Nigeria Police Force, the IGP stated that leadership is defined by responsibility rather than position. He emphasised that professionalism and accountability must become guiding principles across all commands nationwide.
Disu stressed that authority should be exercised with restraint and maintained that respect for human rights remains fundamental to policing. He said every Nigerian must be treated with dignity, fairness and justice, regardless of status or background.
He also announced plans to strengthen internal oversight by empowering the Public Complaint Unit and the X-Squad to operate independently in order to enhance accountability within the Force.
The IGP explained that decentralising police functions would allow various levels of government to participate more actively in security management.
Professor Olu Ogunsakin has been appointed to chair the eight-member state police implementation committee.
The development comes amid renewed commitment by the Federal Government to establish state police as part of broader security reforms across the country.
