Former Military President, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (rtd.), has expressed deep sorrow over the death of elder statesman and former senior public servant, Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji, describing his passing as a monumental loss to Nigeria.
In a condolence message, Babangida extended his sympathies to the family of the deceased, the Sultan of Sokoto, as well as the government and people of Sokoto State, while praying for the peaceful repose of the late elder statesman’s soul.
He described Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji as an accomplished public servant, seasoned diplomat, elder statesman and patriot whose decades of dedicated service left an enduring legacy in Nigeria’s public service and national development.
According to Babangida, the late statesman’s exemplary leadership, selflessness and unwavering commitment to national service became evident early in his career and remained the defining qualities of his contributions to the country.
He noted that Alhaji’s dedication to every national assignment, coupled with his reputation for diligence, integrity and forthrightness, set a high standard for public service in Nigeria.
Babangida said the loss was deeply personal, revealing that he had lost not only a respected colleague but also a trusted friend, confidant and brother.
Reflecting on their relationship, the former Head of State said he would continue to cherish the memories they shared, which were built on trust, mutual respect and a common vision for Nigeria’s progress.
He prayed that Almighty Allah would grant the family of the deceased, the people of Sokoto State and Nigerians the strength to bear the loss, while asking God to admit the late Alhaji Abubakar Alhaji into Al Jannatul Firdaus.
