The Óoni of Ifẹ, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, has expressed profound condolences to the families of the children who tragically lost their lives during a stampede at a charity funfair in Ibadan on Sunday. The event, promoted on Agidigbo Radio, owned by Oriyomi Hamzat, and organized by Women in Need of Guidance and Support (WINGS), a foundation led by Ms. Naomi Silekunola Ogunseyi, a former queen of the Óoni’s Palace, ended in tragedy, casting a shadow over the festive season.
In a statement signed by Otunba Moses Olafare, the Director of Media and Public Affairs for the Óoni’s Palace, the House of Oduduwa extended its sympathies to the Oyo State government, the organizers, and the bereaved families. “We share in the grief and pain that has engulfed the affected families. We pray that Olodumare grants them the fortitude to bear this trying time,” the statement read.
The Óoni commended the prompt response of Governor Seyi Makinde’s administration to the crisis and emphasized the need for collective efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of children across Nigeria. He noted that the incident highlights the urgent need for rigorous adherence to safety standards and child welfare policies.
Reflecting on the organizers, the Óoni praised Ms. Naomi Silekunola Ogunseyi for her past charitable endeavors during her time at Ile Oodua, where she passionately supported indigent children. He encouraged the organizers, including Mr. Oriyomi Hamzat, not to be discouraged but to learn from this tragedy to improve future events.
“We urge them to remain committed to such laudable programs for children, but with better planning and strategies for execution in the future. Lessons must be learned,” the statement added.
The House of Oduduwa also criticized the unprofessional conduct of some media outlets and bloggers, accusing them of sensationalizing the tragedy. “The dissemination of unverified and distorted information has only compounded the grief of the families and individuals directly affected. We urge all media practitioners to exercise restraint, compassion, and professionalism in reporting sensitive issues,” the statement emphasized.
As the community mourns, the Óoni called for unity among stakeholders, urging government officials, media, and citizens to foster a culture of care, respect, and accountability. He pledged the support of the House of Oduduwa in providing solace and healing to those affected.
“May this sorrowful moment inspire a renewed commitment to protecting our children, preserving our shared humanity, and upholding the values of truth and empathy,” the statement concluded.
The tragic stampede, which occurred during an event intended to bring joy to children, has sparked widespread calls for stricter safety protocols at public gatherings to prevent future occurrences.
