Former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, has declared that his track record in governance and infrastructure development equips him to tackle Nigeria’s pressing challenges as the 2027 general elections approach.
Speaking on The Morning Brief, a programme on Channels Television on Friday, the former Rivers State governor expressed confidence in his understanding of the nation’s issues and his ability to provide solutions.
“I’m not concerned about who else is contesting. I’m in the race as a Nigerian candidate because I understand the country’s problems—and I have what it takes to solve them,” he said.
Amaechi pointed to key projects executed during his tenure, particularly in the rail and port sectors, as proof of his competence. He also maintained that he made significant strides in addressing insecurity while in office, insisting that his performance distinguishes him from other aspirants.
A leading figure in the African Democratic Congress, Amaechi criticised the administration of President Bola Tinubu, arguing that the country’s economic conditions have deteriorated under its leadership.
He said widespread hardship has left many Nigerians struggling to meet basic needs.
“People are suffering. Many can barely afford food. Fuel costs are high, travel has become difficult, and airlines are already talking about increasing fares. Everything is on the rise,” he said.
Amaechi further criticised the President’s campaign promises, particularly on electricity supply, suggesting that Nigerians are prepared to hold the government accountable at the polls.
He also raised concerns over alleged efforts to weaken opposition parties, calling for the independence of key institutions such as the Independent National Electoral Commission and the judiciary.
“Regardless of whether the process is free or flawed, if we in the ADC are on the ballot, President Tinubu will lose. The issue is that he does not want credible opposition on the ballot,” Amaechi claimed.
Amaechi is among several high-profile figures within the ADC positioning themselves for the 2027 presidential contest.
Other prominent members of the opposition coalition include Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, Rabiu Kwankwaso, Nasir El-Rufai, and Rauf Aregbesola.
The Independent National Electoral Commission has scheduled the presidential election for January 16, 2027, with party primaries set to take place between April 23 and May 30, 2026.
