The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State and Deputy Governor, Obafemi Hamzat, has reaffirmed his commitment to service, inclusive development, and the preservation of Lagos State’s rich cultural heritage.
Hamzat made the pledge during a courtesy visit to the Oba of Lagos, Rilwan Akiolu, at the Iga Idungaran Palace on Lagos Island.
The visit, described as a symbolic engagement, was aimed at strengthening the long-standing relationship between government and traditional institutions, while underscoring the importance of cultural values in governance and community development.
During the visit, Hamzat paid homage to the revered monarch and acknowledged the critical role traditional rulers play in preserving cultural heritage, promoting peace, and fostering unity among communities across the state.
He noted that Lagos State’s continued growth and development are deeply rooted in respect for its history, traditions, and the wisdom of its traditional institutions.
The deputy governor, whose maternal roots trace back to Lagos Island, stressed that cultural identity remains an essential pillar for social cohesion and responsible leadership.
Accompanied by the Lagos APC Chairman, Pastor Cornelius Ojelabi, Hamzat also visited the historic Ègbè Family House, one of the state’s notable heritage sites. The visit highlighted the importance of preserving historical landmarks and promoting cultural awareness among younger generations.
Hamzat reiterated the administration’s commitment to safeguarding the cultural identity of Lagos while pursuing policies aimed at modernisation and inclusive development. He maintained that culture and tradition remain vital instruments for strengthening communities and sustaining societal values.
According to him, preserving historical legacies and respecting traditional institutions are critical to building a united and progressive society.
The engagements also provided an opportunity to deepen collaboration among key stakeholders and reaffirm the government’s dedication to honouring elders, preserving heritage, and promoting values that unite Lagos residents regardless of ethnic, religious, or social differences.
