Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara has announced fresh appointments to key positions in his administration following the decision by the Rivers State House of Assembly to halt impeachment proceedings against him and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.
The governor appointed Dagogo Wokoma as Secretary to the State Government and Sunny Ewule as Chief of Staff in a move seen as an effort to consolidate his cabinet amid the ongoing political developments in the state.
The decision to suspend the impeachment process was adopted during plenary in Port Harcourt. Speaker of the House, Martin Amaewhule, said the move followed the latest intervention by President Bola Tinubu in the protracted political crisis rocking the state.
Amaewhule explained that the resolution was part of agreements reached at a meeting earlier in the month involving the President, principal officers of the House, parties to the dispute, and elders and leaders of Rivers State.
He further disclosed that Governor Fubara, his deputy, and the state legislature had agreed to withdraw their respective impeachment-related cases from the courts as part of the settlement terms before the motion was put to a vote.
Meanwhile, the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, expressed optimism that the crisis in Rivers State is nearing a lasting resolution.
Speaking to journalists in Abuja after inspecting ongoing projects in the Federal Capital Territory, Wike described President Tinubu’s intervention as decisive and pivotal to resolving tensions between the executive and legislative arms of government in the state.
He said he believed that, by the grace of God, the President would not need to intervene again in the matter and that Rivers people would no longer have to endure such discord.
The latest developments mark a significant step in efforts to restore political stability in Rivers State following weeks of tension over the impeachment move.
