The Minister of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, has announced plans by the Federal Government to deploy artificial intelligence-powered surveillance cameras across Plateau State, beginning with the capital, Jos, in a bid to enhance security.
The initiative follows the recent visit of Bola Ahmed Tinubu to Jos after the Palm Sunday attack that resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries.
Tijani disclosed the development in a statement shared on social media, where he also reflected on his personal experience during the 2001 Jos crisis as a student. He noted that the persistent insecurity in the state underscores the urgency for innovative and technology-driven solutions.
According to the minister, the deployment of AI-enabled cameras will complement efforts to strengthen digital infrastructure in the state, with collaboration between the Federal Government and the Plateau State government.
He added that similar surveillance systems have already been successfully implemented in Lagos State and Enugu State, yielding positive outcomes in crime monitoring and response.
Tijani further explained that the project aligns with President Tinubu’s directive to adopt modern technology in tackling insecurity, noting that the system would enable real-time crime detection, faster emergency response, and improved coordination among security agencies.
Describing the ongoing security challenges in Plateau as deeply troubling, the minister assured that the Federal Government remains committed to deploying all necessary resources to restore peace and safeguard lives and property in the state.
