The Federal Government has launched a specialised PhD programme aimed at developing world-class experts in Nigeria’s oil and gas sector while maintaining international academic standards.
The Petroleum Technology Development Fund on Wednesday flagged off the split-site PhD programme at the College of Petroleum and Energy Studies in Kaduna, with 43 scholars inducted as the pioneer cohort.
Speaking at the event, PTDF Executive Secretary, Ahmed Aminu, described the initiative as a major step toward domesticating advanced petroleum education in Nigeria.
He said the programme marks a transition from reliance on overseas training to a system that combines local academic mentorship with international exposure.
Under the model, scholars will undertake part of their studies in Nigeria and complete the programme at partner institutions in the United Kingdom, including the University of Strathclyde, Robert Gordon University, and the University of Portsmouth.
Aminu said the programme followed a rigorous selection process, with 3,702 applications received and only 43 candidates awarded full scholarships.
He added that the initiative is designed to strengthen local capacity, reduce the cost of foreign education, and position Nigeria as a hub for advanced energy research and innovation.
The PTDF also appointed 43 academic advisers to guide the scholars, many of whom are former beneficiaries of its scholarship scheme.
In his remarks, Executive Secretary of the National Universities Commission, Abdullahi Ribadu, described the programme as a milestone for Nigeria’s university system and national development.
He disclosed that the NUC had granted a licence for the College to operate as a private university, noting that the move would enhance local expertise while maintaining global standards through international partnerships.
Both officials urged the scholars to demonstrate discipline and excellence, stressing that they are expected to play key roles in shaping the future of Nigeria’s energy sector.
The programme is expected to address the shortage of specialised skills in areas such as petroleum engineering, energy economics, and emerging technologies, while supporting government efforts to deepen local content and boost innovation in the industry.
