In a development stirring excitement across Nigeria’s entertainment landscape, a major cultural landmark—the Heritage Event Hall—is set to open its doors, marking a significant milestone in the preservation and celebration of Nigerian music heritage.
The project, inspired by the late music aficionado, Chief Femi Esho, is being realized through the efforts of the Evergreen Music Heritage Foundation, with strong backing from renowned cleric Daniel Kolawole Olukoya, General Overseer of Mountain of Fire and Miracles Ministries.
A Dream Taking Shape
The Heritage Event Hall is envisioned as a premium venue where musicians across genres can perform live, connect with audiences, and sustain Nigeria’s rich musical traditions. Designed as a hub for relaxation and artistic expression, the hall aims to recreate the golden era of live music entertainment in Nigeria.
The initiative is part of a broader vision conceived by the late Femi Esho, widely regarded as one of Africa’s largest collectors of indigenous music. As Chairman of Evergreen Musical Company, Esho spent decades preserving recordings and memorabilia from Nigeria’s musical legends.
Before his passing, he had proposed a comprehensive “music empire”—a cultural complex featuring a museum, archive library, gallery of artist busts, historical photographs dating back to 1914, and relics including vintage costumes and instruments. The plan also included a cinema, recording studio, and a performance arena.
Nearly two years after his death, that vision is gradually becoming reality, beginning with the completion of the event hall—considered the heart of the project.
A Cleric’s Unusual but Profound Support
Observers within the industry have noted the unexpected but impactful involvement of Dr. Olukoya, who is known for maintaining a strict focus on his spiritual calling. However, his long-standing friendship with Esho—and shared passion for music—proved pivotal.
Beyond his pastoral work, Olukoya is a trained academic and musician who composed his first song in 1976. His church choir has also earned international acclaim, winning competitions across Europe and beyond.
As Patron of the Evergreen Music Heritage Foundation, he provided both financial and moral support that enabled the completion of the Heritage Event Hall.
Family’s Tribute to a Loyal Friend
Speaking on behalf of the family, Bimbo Esho, Executive Secretary of the Foundation and Managing Director of Evergreen Musical Company, described Olukoya’s contribution as “invaluable.”
She noted that beyond funding the project, he stood firmly by the family following their father’s passing and ensured that the first phase of the vision was completed.
According to her, “The Esho family remains eternally grateful for his unwavering financial support and fatherly love.”
Reviving the Spirit of Live Music
The Heritage Event Hall is expected to rekindle memories of Nigeria’s iconic live music venues such as Kakadu, Stadium Hotel, and other historic performance spots that defined social life in the 1960s and beyond.
With its modern architecture, elegant chandeliers, and carefully curated ambience, the facility offers more than just performances. It includes lodging for artists and crew, enabling extended shows and creative collaborations.
The hall will host a wide range of activities including concerts, album launches, listening parties, corporate events, film screenings, lectures, workshops, and cultural celebrations.
Looking Ahead
While the opening of the Heritage Event Hall marks a major breakthrough, the Foundation continues to seek public and private support to complete other components of the project, including the museum, studio, library, and exhibition halls.
When fully realized, the complex is expected to become a major tourist attraction and a central pillar in the documentation and promotion of Nigerian music heritage.
For now, the unveiling of the Heritage Event Hall stands as both a tribute to a visionary collector and a testament to an enduring friendship—one that has transformed a dream into a living legacy.
