The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State has taken a swipe at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), describing those still remaining in the opposition party as “undertakers waiting for its final burial.”
The comment came in reaction to the latest wave of defections from the PDP to the ruling APC across several states.
In a statement issued on Saturday in Lagos, the APC Publicity Secretary, Mr. Seye Oladejo, said the mass exodus of PDP leaders was a natural consequence of “years of internal deceit, ideological emptiness, and leadership failure.”
Oladejo mocked the PDP’s claim that the defections would not affect its structure, calling such statements “a symptom of denial and delusion.”
“The PDP’s claim that defections cannot break it is not only laughable but also betrays its chronic state of self-deception.
What is happening today is not mere political migration but the inevitable collapse of a house built on quicksand,” he said.
He described the PDP as a party in “terminal decline,” adding that the few members still holding on were merely staying behind to “perform the final rites of a once-dominant but now lifeless political carcass.”
According to Oladejo, the APC is not surprised by the growing defections, insisting that the opposition party had survived for years only on propaganda and empty rhetoric.
“After mismanaging Nigeria for 16 years, the PDP cannot suddenly reinvent itself as a credible opposition when it remains a cesspool of confusion and a vacuum of leadership,” he stated.
The APC spokesman said that recent defections to the ruling party were proof of renewed confidence in President Bola Tinubu’s “Renewed Hope Agenda”, describing the movement as a political endorsement of the administration’s reform efforts.
“The party is obviously over for the former ‘largest party in Africa.’ The sooner the PDP confronts that reality, the less humiliating its final exit will be,” he added.
Oladejo urged the PDP to conduct an honest post-mortem of its failures and accept that its influence in Nigeria’s political space has drastically diminished.
“The opposition cannot claim to be unshaken when its members are fleeing in droves to a party that represents progress, stability, and genuine leadership,” he said.
“For the APC, these defections are not just political victories — they are clear endorsements of our enduring commitment to national renewal and people-centred governance. Nigerians are speaking loudly, and the message is clear: the era of deceitful opposition politics is over.”
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that several PDP figures, including governors, lawmakers, and political heavyweights, have recently dumped the party for the APC.
On Thursday, the two remaining PDP members in the Ondo State House of Assembly, former Minority Leader Olajide Oguntodu (Akure South 1) and his deputy Oluwatoyin Daodu (Akoko South West 1), defected to the APC, citing internal crises within the opposition.
Political analysts believe the defections mark another significant blow to the PDP’s already weakened national structure ahead of the 2027 general elections.
