The Wife of the Governor of Cross River State, Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, has condemned the alleged assault on street children in the state, describing the act as unacceptable and a violation of their fundamental rights.
In a statement issued on Thursday, Mrs. Otu reacted to reports that some street children were tied down and beaten with a machete, expressing outrage over the incident and stressing that such treatment undermines the dignity of vulnerable members of society.
She emphasised that every child, regardless of their background or circumstances, deserves protection, compassion, and the opportunity to live with dignity.
The First Lady called for an immediate investigation into the allegations and urged relevant authorities to ensure that anyone found culpable is brought to justice. She warned that institutions established to protect citizens must not become instruments of harm.
Mrs. Otu reaffirmed her commitment to safeguarding children across the state, noting that her office is already working with key stakeholders to address the growing number of children living on the streets.
According to her, ongoing efforts are focused on rehabilitation, reintegration, access to education, and strengthening social support systems.
She stressed that the life of every child in Cross River State is important and must be protected at all times.
