A Sagamu Magistrate Court in Ogun State has ordered the remand of a 46-year-old driver, Kayode Adeniyi, who was behind the wheel of the Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two associates of international boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.
Joshua was involved in the crash at about 11:00 a.m. on Monday along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway when the Lexus SUV, with registration number KRD 850 HN, collided with a stationary truck parked by the roadside. The accident resulted in the deaths of Ayodele Kelvin Olu, 36, a Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina, 36, a British citizen.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said on Friday that the driver was arraigned before the Sagamu Magistrate Court on a four-count charge bordering on dangerous driving causing death, reckless and negligent driving.
According to the police, Adeniyi was also charged with driving without due care and attention, causing bodily harm and damage to property, as well as driving without a valid national driver’s licence.
In a post on X, the police spokesperson stated that the defendant was charged under relevant sections of the Federal Highway Act, Cap F:135, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004, as applicable in Ogun State.
The court granted the defendant bail in the sum of N5 million with two sureties. However, he was remanded in custody pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions. The case was adjourned to January 20, 2026, for trial.
The police had earlier announced the arrest and detention of the driver on Thursday, noting that investigations into the incident were ongoing.
Meanwhile, the Lagos and Ogun State governments have confirmed that Anthony Joshua has been discharged from the hospital following treatment after the accident.
