Abuja – The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of Reverend Dr. Uma Ukpai, describing the late evangelist as a “towering figure in the Church in Nigeria” and one of the nation’s most enduring voices of faith.
In a condolence statement personally signed on Monday, CAN President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, said the Association received the news of Ukpai’s death with sadness, noting that his life and ministry left an indelible mark on Christianity in Nigeria and beyond.
“Reverend Dr. Ukpai was a towering figure in the Church in Nigeria whose evangelistic ministry spanned over six decades,” Okoh said.
“Through crusades, teachings, and acts of charity, he devoted his life to preaching the gospel, nurturing faith, and advancing the cause of Christ across denominations and regions.”
The revered evangelist and founder of the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association passed away on October 6, 2025, at the age of 80.
Archbishop Okoh described Ukpai as a “servant of God whose unwavering commitment to evangelism and compassion for humanity inspired generations of believers.”
“His message of faith, healing, and hope in Jesus Christ transformed countless lives. Generations of Christians have been uplifted by his teachings and drawn closer to God through his ministry,” Okoh added.
The CAN President extended condolences to Reverend Dr. (Mrs.) Philomena Uma Ukpai, the Ukpai family, the Uma Ukpai Evangelistic Association, and the wider Christian community across Nigeria and abroad.
“We pray that the Almighty God will comfort the family and grant them the strength to bear this great loss,” he said.
“May the legacy of his faith and service continue to inspire the Church and the nation. May his soul rest in perfect peace.”
Ukpai’s family earlier confirmed his passing in a separate statement, describing it as a “glorious transition” and celebrating his life as that of a spiritual general, devoted husband, and mentor to many.
Widely regarded as one of Nigeria’s pioneering evangelists, Rev. Dr. Uma Ukpai devoted over 60 years to spreading the gospel through mass crusades, faith-based education, and humanitarian work, leaving behind a spiritual legacy that continues to shape Christian ministry in Africa.
