Nigeria’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, has resigned from his position ahead of the 2027 general elections.
His resignation was confirmed on Monday in a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa. Tuggar, a member of the All Progressives Congress, is reported to have stepped down to pursue his governorship ambition in Bauchi State.
According to the statement, the minister submitted his resignation letter barely 24 hours before the deadline set by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for political appointees seeking elective offices.
The directive, communicated through the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, mandates all appointees intending to contest in the 2027 elections to resign on or before March 31. The move is said to be in compliance with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries.
Officials indicated that more resignations are expected in the coming days as other political appointees align with the directive.
Tuggar’s exit follows growing speculation about his intention to contest the Bauchi State governorship election under the APC platform.
Appointed in August 2023, Tuggar is regarded as a seasoned diplomat and policymaker with experience spanning diplomacy, politics, energy, and strategic consulting. During his tenure, he played a key role in shaping Nigeria’s foreign policy and strengthening its international engagements.
