Sixteen members of the Rivers State House of Assembly, led by Speaker Martin Amaewhule, have defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).
The lawmakers announced their defection during plenary on Friday in Port Harcourt.
Speaker Amaewhule, who formally declared the development on the floor of the House, said the decision followed a “clear and irreconcilable division” within the PDP, which he noted had made it impossible for the legislators to continue under the party’s platform.
The mass defection marks a major political shift in the state legislature and is expected to heighten the ongoing political tensions in Rivers State.
More details are expected to follow.
