Dr. Doyin Okupe, a distinguished Nigerian physician and politician, has passed away at the age of 72. Born on March 22, 1952, in Iperu, Ogun State, Dr. Okupe had a multifaceted career spanning medicine and public service.
After completing his medical education at the University of Ibadan and Igbobi College, Dr. Okupe co-founded the Royal Cross Medical Centre in Obalende, Lagos, where he served as Managing Director. His medical career was marked by dedication to community health and the establishment of quality healthcare services.
Transitioning into politics, Dr. Okupe became the National Publicity Secretary of the National Republican Convention (NRC) during the Third Nigerian Republic. He was appointed Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to President Olusegun Obasanjo and later served as Senior Special Assistant on Public Affairs to President Goodluck Jonathan. In these roles, he was known for his strategic communication skills and commitment to national development.
Dr. Okupe faced personal health challenges, including a battle with prostate cancer, which he publicly discussed to raise awareness. He credited his faith and medical care for his recovery, emphasizing the importance of early detection and treatment.
His recent political engagements included supporting the Labour Party during the 2023 general elections and serving as the Director-General of Peter Obi’s Presidential Campaign Organization. He later expressed support for President Bola Tinubu, highlighting his belief in Tinubu’s vision to address Nigeria’s challenges.
Dr. Okupe is survived by his wife, Aduralere Okupe, and their children. His legacy as a dedicated physician, public servant, and advocate for national progress will be remembered by many.
