YENAGOA, Nigeria — Thursday, December 11, 2025 — The Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Lawrence Oborawharievwo Ewhrudjakpo, has died after collapsing suddenly in his office this afternoon.
According to multiple media reports, the 60-year-old deputy governor slumped in his Government House office in Yenagoa at about 1:30 p.m. (WAT) and was immediately rushed to the nearby Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Yenagoa, for emergency treatment.
Hospital sources and family confirmations indicate that Ewhrudjakpo was pronounced dead shortly after arrival at the medical centre, despite urgent efforts to save his life.
The exact medical cause of his collapse has not yet been officially disclosed, though early reports and sources close to him have suggested the possibility of a cardiac-related emergency linked to his demanding schedule.
His media aide, Doubara Atasi, had earlier confirmed the collapse and hospitalisation but did not provide details. Later updates from family and hospital sources have confirmed his passing.
This shocking development comes as Governor Douye Diri is on a short vacation abroad — a situation likely to deepen the sense of shock and grief across the state’s political leadership and residents.
Senator Ewhrudjakpo had served as Bayelsa’s Deputy Governor since February 14, 2020, following a long career in public service including time as a federal lawmaker and Senator.
Details are still emerging, and an official statement from the Bayelsa State Government is expected soon.
Stay tuned for more updates as the story develops.
