Windhoek, Namibia – February 9, 2025
Namibia is in mourning following the passing of its Founding President and revered national leader, His Excellency Dr. Sam Shafiishuna Nujoma, who died at the age of 95 on February 8, 2025, at 23:45 in Windhoek.
Announcing the news in a solemn address to the nation, President Dr. Nangolo Mbumba expressed deep sorrow, stating:
“The foundations of the Republic of Namibia have been shaken… It is therefore with utmost sorrow and sadness that I announce the passing of our revered freedom fighter and revolutionary leader.”
Dr. Nujoma, who had been hospitalized for the past three weeks due to ill health, was remembered as a gallant son of Namibia whose leadership was pivotal in the nation’s struggle for independence.
“Our Founding Father heroically marshaled the Namibian people during the darkest hours of our liberation struggle until the attainment of freedom and independence on March 21, 1990,” President Mbumba said.
As the country enters a period of national mourning, the government has pledged to work closely with the Nujoma and Kondombolo families to finalize burial arrangements.
President Mbumba extended condolences to Former First Lady Kovambo Nujoma, Honorable Utoni Nujoma, and the entire family, while also expressing gratitude to medical staff and well-wishers who supported the late leader in his final days.
“During this period of national mourning, we should be comforted by the unmatched leadership and extraordinary contributions of President Nujoma to the liberation struggle, the development, and unity of the Namibian people.”
Further announcements regarding official mourning and funeral arrangements are expected in the coming days.
End of an Era
Dr. Sam Nujoma’s legacy as a liberation hero, statesman, and nation-builder remains deeply embedded in Namibia’s history. His passing marks the end of an era, but his vision for a free and prosperous Namibia will endure.
