JUST IN: Lagos Speaker Mudashiru Obasa Impeached Over Multibillion-Naira Fraud Allegations
January 13, 2025
Members of the Lagos State House of Assembly have impeached Speaker Mudashiru Obasa amid allegations of financial and statutory misconduct. The decision was made during a plenary session on Monday, leading to the immediate replacement of Mr. Obasa by his deputy, Lasbat Meranda.
Mrs. Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, has now assumed the role of Speaker. She previously served as the House’s Chief Whip before her elevation.
The impeachment follows reports by The Gazette detailing how Mr. Obasa allegedly orchestrated the withdrawal of ₦43.5 billion under controversial circumstances, including for the procurement of backup vehicles for lawmakers.
Mr. Obasa, 52, first assumed the position of Speaker on June 8, 2015, alongside former Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode.
Further developments on this story are expected soon.
