Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has condoled with the family and community of Brigadier General Abu Ali (rtd.), a former Military Administrator of the state, who passed away over the weekend.
In a statement issued on Monday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Mukhtar Gidado, the governor described the late military officer as a distinguished leader whose contributions left a lasting impact on Bauchi State’s development.
“Governor Bala Mohammed, on behalf of his family, government, and the good people of Bauchi State, mourns the passing of Brigadier-General (Rtd.) Abu Ali,” the statement read. “General Abu Ali served with distinction as the Military Administrator of Bauchi State from September 1990 to January 1992 under the Babangida administration.”
During his tenure, the late officer oversaw major developmental initiatives, including the commissioning of the Bauchi Township Water Project, which expanded water infrastructure across the state capital. He also played a decisive role in strengthening the state’s agro-industrial sector by consolidating the Tomato Processing Company.
The statement noted that General Ali’s legacy extended beyond infrastructure, recalling his leadership during the 1991 ethno-religious crisis in Tafawa Balewa and surrounding communities. According to the governor, the late administrator acted swiftly by imposing a curfew and deploying security operatives to restore order and prevent further violence.
Governor Bala further highlighted Ali’s role in founding Wikki Tourists Football Club, which has since become a major symbol of pride for the state.
The governor also paid tribute to the late general’s statesmanship, noting his peaceful transition of power to a democratically elected government in January 1992—an action he described as “a demonstration of respect for democratic governance.”
After retiring from military service, General Abu Ali continued his leadership journey as the Etsu Bassa Nge, a first-class traditional ruler in Kogi State, a position he held from 2000 until his death.
“Late General Abu Ali was known for his humility, integrity, and dedication,” Governor Bala said. “His life was a model of service to his soldiers, to the people of Bauchi, and to his cultural community. He leaves behind a legacy of leadership that transcends his military and political roles.”
The governor extended condolences to the deceased’s family, particularly his children, as well as the Bassa Nge Kingdom in Kogi State. He urged the people of Bauchi State to pray for the repose of the late general’s soul.
“May the memory of Brigadier-General (Rtd.) Abu Ali continue to inspire us all as a servant-leader, a visionary, and a man of courage and compassion,” he added.
