Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau I. Jibrin, has condemned the latest bandit attack in Kano State, which claimed the life of an elderly woman and led to the abduction of three others in Yankamaye village, Tsanyawa Local Government Area.
The incident occurred late Saturday around 11 p.m., when most residents had gone to bed. Eyewitnesses told Arewa PUNCH that the attackers arrived on motorcycles but disembarked at the outskirts of the village, advancing on foot to evade detection.
During the invasion, the gunmen reportedly shot an elderly woman after she begged them to spare her son. They subsequently abducted him along with two women, including the sister-in-law of the ward councillor.
Yankamaye, located about five kilometres from Rimaye town in Katsina State, has witnessed a resurgence of bandit incursions in recent months, particularly following peace deals struck between criminal groups and communities in neighbouring Katsina.
In a statement issued on Sunday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ismail Mudashir, Senator Barau described the attack as “distressing” and urged security agencies to intensify operations to curb cross-border infiltration by armed groups.
“This incident occurred a few days after a similar one in Biresawa village, also in Tsanyawa LGA,” the statement read. “I call on our security agencies to double their efforts to rescue these innocent persons. They should take the fight to the criminals.”
The Senator warned that bandits escaping military pressure in nearby states must not be allowed to destabilise rural communities in Kano.
“This incursion into the area must stop forthwith. The security of our people’s lives and properties is paramount. No stone will be left unturned in achieving this,” he added.
Senator Barau has previously supported security operations in his constituency by providing vehicles, motorcycles, and refurbishing police and Department of State Services facilities. He also facilitated the establishment of security training institutions for the NSCDC, Police Service Commission, and Nigeria Immigration Service across Gwarzo, Kabo, and Bichi.
