The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Owerri Zone, has threatened to resume its suspended strike on November 21, 2025, accusing the Federal Government of failing to address key issues affecting public universities.
The warning was issued on Thursday by the Zonal Coordinator, Prof. Dennis Aribodor, during a press briefing at the ASUU Secretariat, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
The Owerri Zone comprises academic staff from Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu University, Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO), Imo State University (IMSU), Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, and Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.
Prof. Aribodor, speaking alongside other union leaders, said the government has failed to implement critical agreements previously reached with the union. He emphasized that the eight-day notice before the planned strike should be used by the Federal Government to engage in “meaningful and result-oriented negotiations” to avert another nationwide shutdown of public universities.
ASUU has repeatedly accused the government of neglecting issues such as revitalisation of universities, earned academic allowances, and wage reviews, among others.
The union warned that failure to act within the stipulated window may force lecturers across the zone—and nationwide—to down tools once again.
