The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has issued a 14-day ultimatum to the Federal Government to address lingering issues affecting the nation’s universities or risk an indefinite strike.
ASUU President, Prof. [Insert Name], disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday after the union’s National Executive Council meeting. He said the government has failed to implement several agreements previously reached with the union, including improved funding for public universities, payment of earned academic allowances, and adoption of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution (UTAS).
“The patience of our members is running out. We have waited long enough, yet the Federal Government continues to renege on its promises. If within 14 days nothing is done, we will be left with no option but to embark on a nationwide strike,” the statement read.
The union also accused the government of neglecting Nigeria’s higher education sector, warning that continuous underfunding could cripple public universities and worsen brain drain.
Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Education has appealed for dialogue, assuring that efforts are underway to resolve the disputes and prevent disruption of the academic calendar.
