Nigeria has lost one of its most revered elder statesmen, Chief Samuel Ayodele Adebanjo, who passed away peacefully at the age of 96. The nationalist, distinguished lawyer, and leader of the Yoruba socio-cultural group, Afenifere, breathed his last in the early hours of Friday, February 14, 2025, at his residence in Lekki, Lagos State.
His family confirmed his passing in a statement made available to newsmen. “He died peacefully this morning, Friday, February 14, 2025, at his Lekki, Lagos home at the age of 96,” the statement read.
Chief Adebanjo was a prominent voice in Nigeria’s political landscape for decades, known for his unwavering commitment to democracy, good governance, and the restructuring of Nigeria into a true federal system. As a former Organising Secretary of the Action Group (AG), he played a critical role in the nationalist movement and post-independence politics. Until his passing, he remained a strong advocate for a parliamentary system of government, which he argued was more suitable for Nigeria’s diverse polity.
He is survived by his 94-year-old wife, Chief Christy Ayo-Adebanjo, as well as children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. His family expressed their deep sorrow at his loss but also celebrated his lifelong dedication to justice and equity. “We will forever cherish his commitment to fighting for truth, equity, and justice. His belief and struggle for a truly independent and progressive Nigeria was total, and this he fought for until he breathed his last breath,” the family’s statement added.
In honor of his legacy, condolence registers have been opened at his residence at 8, Ayo Adebanjo Close, Lekki Phase 1, Lagos, as well as at his country home in Isanya Ogbo, near Ijebu Ode, Ogun State.
The family also disclosed that consultations are ongoing with Adebanjo’s friends, associates, and various interest groups across Nigeria and beyond to finalize plans for a befitting funeral. Details of the funeral arrangements will be announced in due course.
Chief Ayo Adebanjo’s passing marks the end of an era, as he was one of the last standing titans of Nigeria’s independence struggle and a tireless advocate for progressive governance. His voice will be sorely missed in the national discourse, but his legacy as a fearless and principled leader will continue to inspire generations to come.
