In a landmark election held on Saturday, Mazi Afam Osigwe, a distinguished Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) and former General Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), emerged victorious as the president-elect for the 2024 term. The election results, which were announced online following a day-long voting period, saw Osigwe clinching a decisive win with 20,435 votes.
Osigwe’s triumph marked a significant margin over his closest competitor, Tobenna Erojikwe, Chairman of the NBA-Institute of Continuing Legal Education Governing Council, who garnered 9,437 votes. Chukwuka Ikwuazom (SAN), the former Chairman of NBA Lagos Branch, trailed with 9,007 votes.
Born on October 25, 1972, Afam Osigwe’s legal journey began at the University of Nigeria, Enugu Campus, where he graduated in 1997 before being called to the Bar in 1999. His career in legal leadership includes notable roles such as the inaugural Chairman of Chairmen of NBA Branches, FCT, and a two-year tenure as the General Secretary of the Nigerian Bar Association, starting in August 2014.
The election, which commenced at midnight and concluded precisely at 11:59 pm, marked a new era for the NBA under Osigwe’s leadership. With a resounding victory and a robust vote count, Osigwe is poised to steer the association towards addressing key legal issues and advancing the interests of legal professionals nationwide.
The live streaming of results online ensured transparency throughout the process, reinforcing the commitment to fair elections within the Nigerian legal community. As of midnight on Sunday, the overwhelming support garnered by Afam Osigwe solidified his mandate as the incoming NBA president, reflecting widespread confidence in his vision and leadership capabilities.
