The Federal Government has approved the rollout of a new National Identification Number (NIN) verification service developed by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) to improve identity checks and enhance data protection.
NIMC’s Head of Corporate Communications, Kayode Adegoke, announced the development in a statement issued on Tuesday in Lagos. He said the new service, known as NIN Authentication, is designed to simplify and secure the process of verifying individuals’ identities using their NINs.
According to Adegoke, the Presidency has directed all Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) to adopt the new service for all identity verification processes.
“This initiative is part of NIMC’s mandate to establish a reliable and secure digital identity system for Nigerians and legal residents,” Adegoke stated.
The NIN Authentication service is accessible via web platforms, mobile applications, and application programming interfaces (APIs). It incorporates advanced privacy features, requiring user consent before personal data can be accessed for Know Your Customer (KYC) or other verification procedures.
Adegoke emphasized that the service is aligned with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which seeks to modernize public service delivery and strengthen national digital infrastructure.
The commission noted that the NINAuth application is the official interface for securely connecting to NIMC’s central database and offers users greater control over how their data is shared.
“This platform promotes trust and transparency, giving citizens the tools to manage their personal information effectively,” Adegoke added.
