Former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari, has dismissed rumours circulating online that he is in the custody of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
Describing the reports as “clear mischief” and a “calculated attempt” to tarnish his image, Kyari took to his official X (formerly Twitter) account late Saturday to set the record straight.
“I am currently enjoying a well-deserved rest following the recent dissolution of the NNPCL board and management,” Kyari wrote. He further stated that he remains ready to respond to any lawful inquiry regarding his time in office.
The denial follows social media speculation and a report by an online platform alleging that Kyari had been detained by the anti-graft agency.
PUNCH Online had earlier reported that President Bola Tinubu, in April, relieved both Kyari and NNPCL Board Chairman Pius Akinyelure of their positions. The President subsequently appointed Bashir Ojulari as the new Group CEO, effective April 2, 2025.
Kyari said the rumours peaked in the last two hours before his statement, prompting concern among his family and associates. He thanked those who reached out and urged the public to disregard the false claims.
