Former U.S. President and Nobel Laureate Jimmy Carter has died at the age of 100, passing away peacefully at his home in Plains, Georgia. Carter, who served as the 39th President of the United States from 1977 to 1981, was renowned for his commitment to diplomacy, human rights, and global humanitarian efforts.
Carter made history in 1978 as the first sitting American president to visit Nigeria, strengthening U.S.-Nigeria relations during the administration of then-Military Head of State, General Olusegun Obasanjo. The visit symbolized Carter’s dedication to building bridges with African nations, underscoring his broader focus on international peace and development.
Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Georgia, Carter served in the U.S. Navy before returning to manage his family’s peanut farm. His political career began in the early 1960s, leading to his roles as a Georgia State Senator, Governor of Georgia, and ultimately President of the United States. During his presidency, Carter achieved significant milestones, including brokering the Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel and championing energy conservation and environmental reforms. However, his tenure also faced challenges, such as the Iranian hostage crisis and economic inflation, which contributed to his loss in the 1980 presidential election.
After leaving office, Carter’s post-presidency became one of the most impactful in history. Through the Carter Center, which he founded in 1982, he worked tirelessly to promote democracy, combat disease, and advance human rights worldwide. His efforts earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 He was awarded the 2002 Nobel Peace Prize for according to the White House, “work to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development.”
Carter’s passing comes a year after the death of his beloved wife of 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, who passed away in November 2023. Their enduring partnership was a cornerstone of his life, marked by shared commitments to service and humanitarian work.
Carter is survived by his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. Tributes have poured in from Président Biden, President-Elect Donald Trump and leaders around the world, honoring his life of integrity, service, and unwavering commitment to peace.
