LAGOS — Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has directed an immediate intensification of waste evacuation operations across the state following the recent accumulation of refuse in several communities.
The directive has triggered a coordinated response involving the Lagos Waste Management Authority, the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency and the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, with the agencies tasked with accelerating sanitation efforts in affected areas.
Announcing the development on Thursday through his official social media platform, the governor said additional waste collection trucks and personnel had been deployed to clear refuse backlogs, while sanitation workers had commenced round-the-clock operations to restore cleanliness across the metropolis.
Sanwo-Olu assured residents that environmental agencies were working tirelessly to address the situation and that noticeable progress was already being recorded in several parts of the state.
According to him, the intensified clean-up exercise will continue until all affected neighbourhoods are cleared and environmental standards restored.
The governor noted that Lagos generates more than 13,000 tonnes of waste daily, underscoring the scale of the challenge and the need for sustained intervention and collaboration among government agencies, private operators and residents.
He reiterated the administration’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment, stressing that waste management remains a critical component of the state’s urban development agenda.
Sanwo-Olu also appealed to residents to support ongoing sanitation efforts by disposing of waste responsibly and refraining from dumping refuse in drainage channels, road medians and other unauthorised locations.
He emphasised that public cooperation is essential to achieving lasting environmental sustainability and preventing flooding, especially during the rainy season.
The governor expressed confidence that the coordinated efforts of relevant agencies would swiftly resolve the current waste management challenges and restore cleanliness across Lagos.
