The All Progressives Congress (APC) has approved a six-month extension for caretaker executives overseeing the party’s affairs in Ekiti State and Osun State, in a move aimed at stabilising its internal structure ahead of forthcoming governorship elections.
The decision was taken at the party’s 8th National Convention, where leaders agreed to delay fresh congresses in the two states to avoid disruptions during a sensitive political period.
Presenting the motion, Barau Jibrin noted that the tenure of caretaker committees at ward, local government, and state levels was due to expire at the end of March 2026, but stressed that the timing was not suitable for new internal elections.
He said the extension would allow for better coordination, consolidation, and preparation ahead of future congresses. The motion was seconded by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and received unanimous approval from delegates.
In a related development, the convention dissolved the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), paving the way for the emergence of a new national leadership. The motion for dissolution was moved by National Legal Adviser Abdulkarim Kana and seconded by Deputy National Secretary Abdulkarim Oluopolekana.
Also at the convention, Speaker of the House of Representatives Tajudeen Abbas called for the adoption of a consensus approach in electing new party officials, a proposal seconded by Uba Sani.
Meanwhile, Senate President Godswill Akpabio moved a motion to ratify congresses conducted nationwide across ward, local government, state, and zonal levels, stating that the exercises complied with electoral laws and party guidelines. The motion was seconded by Hope Uzodimma, who also chairs the Progressive Governors’ Forum.
All motions presented at the convention were adopted without opposition, reflecting a unified stance by the ruling party as it prepares for upcoming electoral contests.
