A Sagamu Magistrate Court in Ogun State has remanded a 46-year-old driver, Kayode Adeniyi, in custody over his alleged involvement in the road accident that claimed the lives of two close friends of international boxing champion, Anthony Joshua.
The incident occurred on Monday at about 11:00 a.m. when a Lexus Sports Utility Vehicle conveying Joshua and his associates collided with a stationary truck parked along the roadside. The vehicle, with registration number KRD 850 HN, was said to be driven by Adeniyi at the time of the crash.
Two passengers in the vehicle, identified as Ayodele Kelvin Olu, 36, a Nigerian-British citizen, and Gami Sina, 36, a British citizen, were confirmed dead following the accident. Joshua sustained injuries and was later hospitalised.
Confirming developments on Friday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, said the driver was arraigned before the Sagamu Magistrate Court on a four-count charge bordering on dangerous driving causing death, reckless driving and negligent driving.
According to the police, Adeniyi was also charged with driving without due care and attention, as well as driving without a valid national driver’s licence, contrary to provisions of the Federal Highway Act.
In a post on X, the police spokesperson said the defendant was granted bail in the sum of ₦5 million with two sureties but was remanded in custody pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions. The case was subsequently adjourned to January 20, 2026, for trial.
“The Ogun State Police Command wishes to inform the general public that the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the Anthony Joshua accident case, Adeniyi Mobolaji Kayode, aged 46, was charged before the Sagamu Magistrate Court today, January 2, 2026, and the case has been adjourned to January 20, 2026,” the statement read in part.
The police had earlier announced the arrest and detention of the driver as investigations into the fatal crash continued.
Meanwhile, the Lagos and Ogun State governments have confirmed that Anthony Joshua has been discharged from the hospital following treatment for injuries sustained in the accident.
