November 18, 2025, Hon. Adetola Adunni Abubakar; Executive Chairman of Agboyi-Ketu Local Council Development Area flagged off E-Birth Registration in Agboyi-Ketu. This event was held at the Ketu Primary Healthcare Centre on Akintan Street.
The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) the global agency dedicated to protecting the rights and futures of children worldwide has taken a bold step in the registration of births in Nigeria. They were on ground to launch the e-birth registration programme in Agboyi-Ketu and the Chairman; Hon. Adetola Abubakar was on ground to do justice to that. The UNICEF asserts that any child not registered is not accounted for and therefore denied his/her legal representation in society. They request all stakeholders to integrate childbirth registration into immunizations, medical treatments, school registrations, etc.
The UNICEF is working in collaboration with the National Population Commission (NPC) to implement e-birth registration throughout Nigeria and of course, the Local Governments are their major outlet channels and primary partners to ensure success of the programme. The e-birth registration is being done through the Electronic Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (e-CRVS) system, launched by the Federal Government through the NPC/UNICEF Collaboration. This digital system captures birth data using internet-connected tablets at delivery points, instantly syncing it to a central database and linking it with a National Identification Number (NIN), which is also generated instantly for the baby’s legal identity and access to services.
The advantages of the e-birth Registration using the e-CRVS system include:
NIN Integration: The system links a child’s birth record to their National Identification Number (NIN), creating a permanent identity for life.
Digital Capture: Birth information is collected using Internet-enabled tablets at hospitals and other child delivery points.
Centralized Database: Data is synced to a central dashboard for validation by the National Population Commission (NPC).
Interoperability: The e-CRVS system is designed to interoperate with other government services, such as healthcare, immunization, and education records.
The ongoing e-Birth Registration pilot scheme has landed in Agboyi-Ketu and Hon. Adetola Adunni Abubakar was more than happy to flag it off!
The e-Birth registration using the e-CRVS is applicable to babies from age 0 to 1 only. Several mothers were there at the flag-off with their babies to get their new borns registered and the Chairman was available to supervise the process of registering HER BABIES – as she calls them all…
