Press Conference Held at UNILAG for Governor Diri’s Leadership Book and Good Governance Chair Launch
On October 8, 2025, the University of Lagos played host to a press conference marking the unveiling of Leadership Chronicles of Governor Douye Diri, a book detailing the leadership journey of the Bayelsa State Governor. The event also featured the announcement of the establishment of a professional chair on good governance in honour of His Excellency, Senator Douye Diri.
Organised by Unilag Consult Ltd, the conference began in the early afternoon and was chaired by Professor John Lekan Oyefara, Managing Director of Unilag Consult. He was joined by Professor Hope Eghagha of the Department of English, University of Lagos, and Mr. Sola Ojewusi, journalist and publisher of The Lagosian Magazine.
The event drew wide media coverage, with representatives from TVC News, The Guardian, The Lagosian Magazine, FrankTalkNow, Unilag News, The Sun Newspaper, and several other outlets in attendance.
During the Q&A session, members of the press queried the focus on Governor Diri. Responding, Professor Eghagha explained that the book was part of a broader initiative by Unilag Consult to document leadership achievements across Nigerian states, with Bayelsa being the starting point. He cited empirical findings highlighting the governor’s positive impact, including improved security and inclusive governance.
Mr. Ojewusi added that Governor Diri stood out for his collaborative approach to leadership, successfully bringing together individuals across party lines to promote state development.
Professor Oyefara addressed questions on whether the University of Lagos was conducting nationwide leadership studies. He clarified that the university primarily engages in consultancy and documentation efforts, noting that the Diri project took nearly two years to complete, involving on-ground visits, fact-finding, and extensive research.
A notable concern raised by the press focused on how the project would translate into practical impact for young Nigerians, especially given the widespread disillusionment with governance. In response, the panel assured that the initiative includes plans for awareness campaigns aimed at reshaping public perception and fostering hope in leadership through education and youth engagement.
The book is slated for official launch on November 5, 2025. Unilag Consult urged the media to amplify coverage and awareness ahead of the release. The event concluded with a vote of thanks and collective appreciation from all participants.
