The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) confirmed the incident, which occurred around 9:30 pm on Friday, was caused by brake failure of a speeding Mercedes-Benz tipper truck with registration number NNE 893 ZG.
According to Margaret Onabe, the FRSC Anambra Sector Public Education Officer, the truck rammed into roadside pedestrians and collided with other vehicles and motorcycles, including a Honda and Qlink motorcycle.
“Preliminary investigation indicates that the crash was caused by brake failure. A total of 10 persons were involved — four male adults, one female adult, three male children, and two female children,” Onabe stated.
Three victims were confirmed dead on arrival at the Anglican Diocesan Hospital, while a fourth died shortly after. Another fatality was recorded at Pat Angelina Hospital, bringing the total death toll to five. Several other victims sustained bruises and fractures and are currently receiving treatment.
The FRSC rescue team, which arrived at the scene 31 minutes after being alerted, managed traffic and visited the hospitals where the injured were taken.
The Sector Command has warned motorists to conduct routine vehicle checks, especially on brake systems, and avoid speeding to prevent future tragedies.
