The All Progressives Congress (APC) has announced the temporary closure of its National Secretariat in Abuja to honour the memory of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died on Sunday in a London hospital at the age of 82.
In an official statement released on Monday, the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Felix Morka, said the secretariat will remain closed from Monday, July 15, through Thursday, July 17, 2025, as a mark of respect for the late statesman.
“In honour of our departed leader, former President Muhammadu Buhari, the National Secretariat of the APC will be closed for three days. We join the nation and the world in mourning the loss of a patriot, a soldier, and a two-time leader of our great country,” the statement read.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, who confirmed the news of Buhari’s passing through his Special Adviser on Information, Bayo Onanuga, and former presidential spokesperson Garba Shehu, had earlier directed full state honours and national mourning in Buhari’s memory.
Buhari passed away in London at approximately 4:30 p.m. on Sunday after battling a prolonged, undisclosed illness. His death came just hours before the announcement of the passing of Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, marking a day of double national grief.
A prominent figure in Nigeria’s history, Buhari served as military Head of State from 1984 to 1985, and later as a democratically elected president from 2015 to 2023, becoming the first opposition candidate to defeat an incumbent president in Nigerian history.
In response to his passing, President Tinubu has dispatched Vice President Kashim Shettima and Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila to the United Kingdom to oversee arrangements and accompany the late president’s remains back to Nigeria for burial.
The APC urged its members and Nigerians across the country to reflect on Buhari’s legacy of discipline, service, and sacrifice, and to uphold the values he championed throughout his career.
