12th July 2025 – Security was visibly heightened at the headquarters of the Lagos State Independent Electoral Commission (LASIEC) in Yaba on Saturday as local government elections got underway across the state.
A News Agency of Nigeria correspondent reported a strong deployment of security personnel at the LASIEC office, including a large contingent of police officers, officials of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and operatives from the Department of State Services (DSS), all stationed in strategic positions around the premises.
Access to the LASIEC headquarters was heavily restricted, with roadblocks mounted at both ends of the adjoining street to control vehicular movement and maintain order.
Similar security arrangements were reported in other parts of the state, including Badagry, where officers from the Nigeria Police Force, NSCDC, and the Federal Road Safety Corps were on ground to ensure a peaceful election.
In the Mosan-Okunola Local Council Development Area of Alimosho, compliance with the movement restriction order was high, with voters conducting themselves peacefully.
As of 9 a.m., the usually busy streets of Mosan-Okunola, including Abesan Gate Road, Akowonjo Road, and the Ipaja-Ayobo axis, were quiet and largely deserted. Shops, markets, and motor parks remained closed, while only security operatives, election officials, and accredited observers were seen moving around.
The state-wide elections are being held to elect chairpersons and councillors across Lagos State’s 20 local government areas and 37 local council development areas.
