Senate President Godswill Akpabio has called for greater investment in the National Space Research and Development Agency (NASRDA), describing it as a vital tool in tackling Nigeria’s security and economic challenges.
Speaking through Senator Samson Ekong (Akwa Ibom South) at the agency’s 2025 Top Management Retreat in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Akpabio reaffirmed the National Assembly’s support for the agency’s mission. His comments were detailed in a statement released in Abuja by NASRDA’s Director of Media and Corporate Communications, Dr. Felix Ale.
The Senate President stressed that NASRDA holds a central role in developing innovative, technology-driven solutions for national development, especially in areas such as surveillance, agriculture, and national security.
“Space-based technologies now drive key socio-economic systems worldwide,” Akpabio said. “Nigeria must not be left behind. Adequate resources should be allocated to this critical sector.”
He advocated for stronger collaboration between NASRDA and the legislature, urging the use of space technologies for real-time monitoring of security threats, especially in remote and ungoverned parts of the country.
Akpabio also emphasized that sustained funding for space science and technology is essential to positioning Nigeria competitively in the global knowledge economy.
