President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will host Nigeria’s Super Falcons at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, following their stunning triumph at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The reception, scheduled as part of official celebrations, comes on the heels of the Falcons’ 3–2 victory over host nation Morocco’s Atlas Lionesses in a dramatic final held in Rabat over the weekend. The win secured Nigeria’s 10th continental title, reaffirming the country’s dominance in African women’s football.
Ahead of the State House reception, several dignitaries — including Governors Uba Sani (Kaduna), AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq (Kwara), and Hope Uzodimma (Imo), along with top federal ministers — were on hand at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport to welcome the team back to the country.
The Falcons’ return has sparked nationwide celebration, with fans and officials alike praising the team’s resilience, tactical discipline, and unwavering determination throughout the tournament.
Adding to the team’s glory, four Super Falcons stars have been named in the WAFCON 2024 Best XI, as announced by the Confederation of African Football (CAF Women) on its official X (formerly Twitter) page.
Topping the list is Rasheedat Ajibade, who was voted Player of the Tournament. The Atlético Madrid forward dazzled throughout the campaign, earning Woman of the Match accolades in three of Nigeria’s six games.
Esther Okoronkwo also impressed, registering two goals and four assists, playing a key role in Nigeria’s attack.
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie was named Best Goalkeeper of the tournament after recording four clean sheets, including heroic saves in the semi-final and final matches.
Defensive stalwart Michelle Alozie earned recognition for her consistency, playing every minute of Nigeria’s campaign, and scoring a memorable late winner against South Africa in the semi-final.
President Tinubu is expected to commend the team’s performance, which has not only brought pride to the nation but also elevated the profile of women’s football in Nigeria. The occasion is set to highlight the administration’s ongoing commitment to sports development and youth empowerment.
