RABAT, July 27, 2025 — President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Nigeria’s Super Falcons of a hero’s welcome and national celebration following their sensational victory at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) in Morocco.
The Nigerian side staged a dramatic comeback at the Olympic Stadium in Rabat, overturning a 2–0 deficit to defeat host nation Morocco 3–2, clinching their record-extending 10th WAFCON title.
Morocco struck twice in the first half through tournament top scorer Ghizlane Chebbak (12’) and Sanaâ Mssoudy (24’). But the Falcons responded with fire and grit:
- Esther Okoronkwo converted a penalty in the 64th minute,
- set up Folasade Ijamilusi for the equaliser in the 71st,
- before Jennifer Echegini fired home the 88th-minute winner off an Okoronkwo free-kick.
President Tinubu, in a video call with the team and officials after the final whistle, congratulated the players for lifting the nation’s spirit.
“We are proud of you. The entire country is proud of you. You lifted our spirits, and we are all very happy,” Tinubu said.
“You will be celebrated. I also congratulate the coaches, the team management, and our sports ministry.”
Responding to team captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who thanked the President for approving their bonuses and promised to present the trophy in Abuja, Tinubu added,
“Good. I look forward to that.”
In an earlier statement by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, Tinubu praised the team’s resilience:
“The Super Falcons’ comeback win against a spirited Moroccan side, on their home turf, is a true testament to Nigerian determination and excellence.”
Nigeria’s latest triumph adds to their previous WAFCON titles in 1998, 2000, 2002, 2004, 2006, 2010, 2014, 2016, and 2018.
The nation awaits the return of its champions.
