Edu described the initiative as one of the most impactful innovations of the Renewed Hope Administration, particularly for vulnerable Nigerians, including pregnant and lactating women, malnourished children and other persons in need of food support.

Speaking with journalists shortly after the launch in Calabar, Edu said the Community Food Bank would not only provide immediate nutritional assistance to vulnerable families but also stimulate local production and strengthen the economy of Cross River State and the South-South region.

She said, “I am so grateful to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and his beautiful wife, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, who came today to launch the National Community Food Bank. I think it is one of the biggest innovations that gets to those who need it the most in Nigeria.

“Lactating mothers, pregnant women, malnourished children and other vulnerable persons can walk into the facility and get food whenever they need it.

“Beyond providing fresh food, the initiative also patronises local producers, meaning that the economy of Cross River State and indeed the entire South-South region will receive a significant boost.”

Edu also commended the Cross River State Governor Bassey Edet Otu and his wife, Bishop Eyoanwan Bassey Otu, for the effective mobilisation and hospitality extended during the visit of the First Lady, as well as their efforts toward the development of the state.

She expressed optimism that the initiative would contribute to improving the wellbeing of vulnerable citizens while creating opportunities for local farmers and producers.

“I want to commend the Governor of Cross River State, Senator Prince Otu, and his dear wife for the wonderful mobilisation today and for the great work they are doing in Cross River State.

“I believe that things will only get better for Nigeria and for Cross River State going forward,” she said.

Edu, who also described herself as a woman in technology, commended the Federal Government, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) and Senator Oluremi Tinubu for the commissioning of an ICT centre at the University of Cross River State (UNICROSS).

She said the facility would provide young Nigerians, especially women and youth, with the skills and exposure required to compete in an increasingly technology-driven global economy, particularly in the area of Artificial Intelligence.

According to her, the investment represents a strategic intervention in women and youth development and digital capacity building.

She said, “I think that’s a wonderful job by TETFund and the Federal Government of Nigeria under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

“It is a wonderful ICT centre for young people, especially women, to encourage them and bring them up to speed with what the world is dealing with right now, which is Artificial Intelligence.

“I am sure that these young people will receive 360-degree digital training that can open doors for them both nationally and internationally.

“I am grateful to the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, for coming in to commission the facility. I believe that the University of Cross River State, women and other students will be better for it.”

An Executive Director of Nigerian Maritime, Administration and Safety Agency, (NIMASA), Chudi Offodile, says erosion and environmental issues, low internally generated revenue, soaring house rent and brain drain are some of the major challenges facing Anambra State as it marks 35 years of creation.

In a congratulatory message to Ndi Anambra on the State’s 35th anniversary, Offodile described the State’s development journey as a bag of mixed stuff.
He noted that while appreciable progress had been made in the past 35 years, there were still serious work to be done to place the State on firm footing.

‘I congratulate my fellow citizens on the gains achieved so far. After a troubling start, we’ve been able to achieve a unity of purpose. Our reasoned premium on competent leadership is not a small gain. It’s the foundation of our headway in administration and modernisation since 2003.’

Offodile, a former member of the House of Representatives, said in terms of social stability and infrastructure growth, the agitation for creating the State had to some extent been justified. He explained that while the quest for state creation in the old Anambra State was vindicated by the State’s growing fortunes, other challenges remain.

‘We acknowledge past and present administrations for their contributions. We have had accountable governments. The State has gained in physical structures. The practice of political inclusivity has fostered sense of fairness and peace. Now, where do we go from here?’

Identifying areas of next emphasis, he said. ‘The erosion threat is still there. It calls for multi, long term action. The urgency of the problem is seen from the fact that the State has small land mass. Another is low internally generated revenue. This has proved an uphill task for every regime. It has to be addressed if we truly want development. There is also the housing crisis. Ninety percent of households in our urban towns are groaning under high rents and insufficient residential accommodation. The situation calls for a new approach to the problem. ‘

On the issue of brain drain, the ex lawmaker canvassed development of a system by which the State would richly benefit from it’s human capital. ‘Education is our key industry. Every year, we produce thousands of graduates and post graduates. But they soon migrate to other places to practice their skills. So we need to reposition to benefit from their services.’

Offodile commended Governor Charles Soludo for rising above constraints of the time to register bold steps in development. ‘Credit goes to the Soludo administration for taking the State to a new level. The Anambra Mixed Industrial City and Solution Innovation District are landmark undertakings. This is the first time we’re having an industrial park. Organised production and commerce is good news for the economy. Likewise, the entrepreneurship energy to be unleashed by the innovation venture are great stories in development. And with other strides in social amenities, there’s bright future for Anambra State.’

The delegation, led by the Global Director General of CAAWOND, Her Royal Highness, Princess Omobola Bolu Omoleme, comprised prominent members of the organisation’s National and Lagos State leadership. Among those on the delegation were the National Women Leader for Strategy and Special Projects, Hon. Oluwatoyin Kolade; Legal Adviser, Barr. Dr. Rufus Aladeyelu; Director of Media Affairs and Coordinator, Diaspora Relations, Hon. Mudasiru Quadri Olanrewaju; and Coordinator of Women in Politics and Business, Mrs. Funke Tawa Adeyemi.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Ademola Adeleke of the Accord Party winner of the 2026 Osun State governorship election, securing a second term in office.

Adeleke defeated his closest challenger, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Bola Oyebamiji, after polling 511,067 votes against Oyebamiji’s 444,815 votes.

The result gave Adeleke a winning margin of 66,252 votes. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) candidate, Najeem Folasayo Salaam, finished a distant third with 17,180 votes.

Salaam had entered the election as one of the candidates regarded as capable of emerging as a strong third force, particularly after receiving the backing of former Osun State Governor and former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola. However, his support did not translate into enough votes to challenge the two leading candidates.

Adeleke’s victory makes him the third governor in Osun State’s history to secure a second term through an election, joining Olagunsoye Oyinlola and Aregbesola.

Oyinlola won a second term but did not complete it after a court ruling nullified his election over electoral irregularities. Aregbesola subsequently succeeded him and won a second term, serving eight years in office.

Adeleke’s Re-election

Adeleke’s victory came after a closely contested campaign marked by intense competition and political divisions, including disagreements within his own political camp over his re-election bid.

Despite the challenges, the incumbent governor succeeded in retaining a significant portion of his electoral base while mobilising support across the state.

His campaign highlighted his administration’s record in office, particularly infrastructure projects and direct engagement with residents, while portraying the election as a choice between continuity and a return to the APC.

Supporters also pointed to Adeleke’s visibility across the state and his perceived connection with ordinary residents as factors that strengthened his appeal during the campaign.

The result, however, shows that the APC mounted a formidable challenge. Oyebamiji’s 444,815 votes demonstrated the strength of the opposition campaign, although it was ultimately insufficient to unseat the incumbent.

The 66,252-vote margin also indicates that the election was competitive, with Adeleke required to defend his political base against a well-organised opposition.

With INEC’s declaration, attention will now turn to the political aftermath of the election, including the response of the APC and other contestants and whether any challenge to the result will be pursued through the courts.

For Adeleke, the victory ushers in another four-year mandate and places renewed expectations on his administration to consolidate its achievements and deliver on its promises to the people of Osun State.

The Kogi State Government has approved new fees for political parties and candidates seeking to display billboards, posters, branded T shirts, caps and other campaign materials ahead of the 2027 general elections and the October 2026 local government elections.

The Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Fanwo, announced the approved rates in Lokoja on Tuesday following a meeting between government officials, political stakeholders and operators in the signage and advertising sector.

The development comes ahead of the commencement of campaigns for the presidential and National Assembly elections, scheduled for August 19.

According to Fanwo, the fees are intended to regulate political advertising across the state, ensure compliance with existing signage regulations and generate revenue for the development of Kogi State.

Under the approved structure, presidential candidates will pay N150 million for campaign signage and related promotional materials across the state, while senatorial candidates will pay N50 million.

House of Representatives candidates will pay N30 million, while candidates contesting seats in the state House of Assembly will pay N5 million.

For the local government elections, chairmanship candidates will pay N2 million, while councillorship candidates will be required to pay N300,000.

Fanwo said the rates were determined after a peer review of applicable charges in other states, adding that the government considered the fees affordable given the scale and reach of political campaigns.

He explained that the charges would also enable the government to regulate the proliferation of campaign materials while ensuring that political advertising contributes to the state’s revenue base.

The commissioner warned that placing campaign materials without paying the prescribed fees and obtaining the required approvals would constitute an offence.

He said offenders, including individuals or organisations found aiding or facilitating violations, would be prosecuted.

Fanwo stressed that the regulations would apply equally to all political parties and candidates, including members of the ruling All Progressives Congress.

“In Kogi, APC is the ruling party, but that does not exempt any APC candidate from complying with the law. If you are an APC candidate and you did not pay the prescribed fee before placing your billboards or posters, we will remove them, and you will be prosecuted,” he said.

He urged all political parties and candidates to comply with the regulations governing the placement of campaign materials across the state.

Fanwo further disclosed that the Kogi State Signage and Advertisement Agency, under the State Ministry of Information and Communications, would oversee the regulation of signage and outdoor advertising activities and coordinate enforcement of the new campaign signage regime.

He assured stakeholders that enforcement would be carried out fairly and without political discrimination.

The General Manager of KOSSAA, Richard Osaseyi, said the agency would commence full enforcement of the regulations from next week.

Osaseyi urged political parties, candidates, campaign organisations and billboard operators to register with the agency and obtain the necessary approvals before erecting or displaying campaign materials.

He warned that unauthorised campaign materials would be removed and that individuals or organisations found violating the regulations would face appropriate sanctions.

The Osun State Police Command has summoned Senator Francis Fadahunsi, representing Osun East Senatorial District, over alleged threatening remarks against members of the Accord Party ahead of Saturday’s governorship election.

The command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, confirmed the development on Wednesday, saying Fadahunsi was summoned by the Commissioner of Police overseeing election security in the state, Samuel Etaifo.

“I can confirm that he (Fadahunsi) has been summoned by the CP. We will make a statement available regarding it,” Ojelabi said.

The senator reportedly made the remarks on Tuesday while speaking at the palace of the Owa Obokun of Ijesaland in Ilesa during a protest over the alleged killing of three members of the All Progressives Congress in the town.

A video circulating on social media showed Fadahunsi speaking in Yoruba and allegedly threatening Accord Party members who might be seen in Ilesa before election day.

The alleged comments have sparked condemnation and heightened concerns over the possibility of political violence ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

In a separate video circulating online, the APC candidate for Ifelodun, Boripe and Odo Otin Federal Constituency, Francis Eniade, was also allegedly heard warning non APC supporters against coming out to vote in Odo Otin Local Government Area on election day.

Eniade reportedly instructed APC supporters to return to their wards and polling units and tell residents that only APC members should vote.

The developments come amid heightened political tension across parts of Osun State as political parties intensify their final campaigns ahead of Saturday’s poll.

Governor Ademola Adeleke has called for Fadahunsi’s arrest, describing the alleged remarks as capable of triggering widespread violence.

Adeleke said he had raised the matter with the Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, and requested an investigation into the senator. According to the governor, Disu confirmed that the video had been seen and assured him that appropriate action would be taken.

“The second issue has to do with the viral video of a serving Senator, Francis Fadahunsi, who today called for the killing of Accord Party leaders, supporters and their families,” Adeleke said.

The governor described the alleged comments as beyond politics and called for intervention by the Federal Government through the Office of the National Security Adviser.

The police summons comes as security agencies intensify preparations for the Osun governorship election, with concerns over political violence and inflammatory statements mounting in some parts of the state.

However, Fadahunsi has since clarified his remarks, describing them as metaphorical and explaining that he was referring to votes as the instrument with which the Accord Party could be defeated in the area.

He made the clarification during a press conference in Ilesa on Tuesday.

The police have yet to disclose when Fadahunsi is expected to appear before the command or what further action may follow the investigation.

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has arrived in Osogbo, the Osun State capital, to support the African Democratic Congress governorship candidate, Najeem Folasayo Salaam, ahead of the August 15 governorship election.

Atiku announced his arrival in a post on his X handle on Monday, saying he was in the state alongside a delegation of political associates to participate in the ADC’s grand finale campaign rally for Salaam, popularly known as Iwaloye.

According to the former vice president, the visit is aimed at rallying support for the ADC candidate and making a final appeal to voters ahead of Saturday’s election.

“We are here to rally support for our candidate and make a final appeal to the people of Osun State to entrust the ADC with the responsibility of delivering purposeful leadership, good governance and a better future for all,” Atiku said.

A former Caretaker Chairman of Obio/Akpor Local Government Area in Rivers State, Chijioke Ihunwo, has pledged his support for the Rainbow Coalition and declared his readiness to mobilise for President Bola Tinubu and other candidates endorsed by the alliance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Ihunwo, a former strong ally of Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara during the prolonged political crisis in the state, said his decision was influenced by the governor’s recent call for reconciliation and political unity.

Speaking during an interview on Beyond the Headlines, Ihunwo said he was following Fubara’s directive to support the coalition as part of efforts to sustain peace in Rivers State.

“Our governor has said there is peace in Rivers State and that we need to move on. If you truly support him, you should join him in the Rainbow Coalition. That is what we are doing for peace to reign in our state,” he said.

Ihunwo said Fubara had directed his supporters to work with the coalition and support President Tinubu as well as other candidates endorsed by the alliance.

“I am following the governor because he is my principal. Whatever he asks me to do, that is what I will do. We are going to work together to ensure that all the members of the Rainbow Coalition are elected, including Mr President,” he stated.

He maintained that his support for the coalition should not be interpreted as a betrayal of the governor, insisting that it was part of his commitment to Fubara’s reconciliation efforts and the restoration of political stability in Rivers State.

According to Ihunwo, all supporters of the governor should embrace the reconciliation initiative and work towards preserving peace, stability and development in the state.

The Coalition of Etung Youth for Good Governance has defended Cross River State Governor Bassey Otu against recent criticisms by the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Senator Sandy Onor, describing the remarks as politically motivated and disconnected from the realities of governance in the state.

In a statement signed by its Convener, Fidelis Okang, the group argued that Senator Onor’s comments should be viewed in the context of his defeat in the 2023 governorship election.

The coalition urged the former governorship candidate to reflect on the reasons Cross River voters elected Governor Otu instead of engaging in what it described as persistent criticism of the administration.

According to the group, Governor Otu inherited a state grappling with heavy debt, deteriorating infrastructure and declining investor confidence but immediately commenced efforts to reposition the state through his “People First” agenda.

The coalition said the administration has prioritised security, infrastructure, tourism, healthcare, education and economic development since assuming office.

The group also cited the acquisition of additional aircraft for Cally Air, efforts to actualise the Bakassi Deep Seaport, reconstruction of the Cross River State Library, establishment of the University of Education and Entrepreneurship Development, road construction projects, rural electrification, business empowerment programmes, free healthcare for pregnant women and children under five, annual payment of WAEC and NECO examination fees, transportation subsidies and initiatives aimed at restoring Cross River’s oil-producing status.

According to the coalition, these programmes and projects have strengthened public confidence in Governor Otu’s administration and contributed to his growing support across the state.

The group maintained that the governor remains committed to delivering on his mandate despite political criticisms, adding that lasting legacies are built through consistent governance, discipline and commitment to the welfare of the people.

The statement concluded that while political attacks may persist, the administration remains focused on implementing policies and projects aimed at improving the lives of Cross River residents.
