It was a tragic weekend in Niger State after no fewer than 70 persons, including a pregnant woman and many children, were burnt to death while scooping fuel from a crashed fuel tanker. At least 56 residents sustained varying degrees of burns and were rushed to different hospitals for treatment. As Nigeria’s refining capacity increases, the 450,000 barrels of crude oil allocated for local refineries is no longer enough. This is as the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission revealed that the Dangote refinery, the Port Harcourt refinery, and six others would need 770,500 barrels for daily fuel production.
