In a bid to unlock its economic and technological potential, Abia State is set to embark on a collaborative journey with Israel, focusing on various sectors including agriculture, technology, digital economy, and micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs). Governor Alex Otti unveiled this ambitious plan during a visit by His Excellency Michael Freeman, the Israeli Ambassador to Nigeria, at the Government House in Umuahia.
The meeting between Governor Otti and Ambassador Freeman underscored the mutual admiration between the two nations and their shared commitment to fostering innovation and progress. Ambassador Freeman commended Governor Otti’s leadership, particularly highlighting the significant strides made in enhancing security within Abia State.
Expressing his surprise at the positive security assessment from his embassy’s security team, Ambassador Freeman lauded Governor Otti’s dedication to maintaining peace and stability in the state. He emphasized the importance of this visit, coinciding with Israel’s 76th Independence Anniversary, as a testament to the growing ties between Abia, Nigeria, and Israel.
Highlighting the commonalities between Abia and Israel, particularly their entrepreneurial spirit and youthful population, Ambassador Freeman outlined potential areas of collaboration. Agriculture emerged as a key focus, with Israel’s expertise in innovative farming techniques offering promising solutions for increasing productivity while conserving resources such as water.
Governor Otti, reciprocating the enthusiasm for collaboration, expressed his gratitude for the visit and wholeheartedly embraced the proposal for partnership. Recognizing the wealth of human capital in Abia, Otti pledged the state government’s commitment to working closely with Israel to leverage technology and innovation for economic growth.
The discussion also touched upon education and technology, with Ambassador Freeman highlighting Israel’s Innov8 program aimed at nurturing young Nigerian entrepreneurs and innovators. Governor Otti welcomed the opportunity for knowledge exchange and announced plans to establish an Abia Innovation Center to further propel the state’s digital transformation agenda.
