Former Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa has denied reports that he refunded N500 billion to the state government in connection with ongoing investigations by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
The rumour, which has gained traction on social media and some online platforms, alleged that Okowa discreetly returned the substantial sum as part of a covert deal to avoid prosecution and maintain political leverage.
It was further claimed that the alleged refund formed part of a confidential arrangement designed to ease legal pressure and secure leniency from anti-corruption agencies.
However, speaking with our correspondent, Okowa, through his Chief Press Secretary, Olise Ifeajirika, dismissed the claims as entirely false.
“There is no truth to the rumour whatsoever,” Ifeajirika said, emphasizing that neither the former governor nor his associates had made any such refund.
The clarification comes as the EFCC continues probes into financial dealings during Okowa’s administration, which ended in May 2023.
