Tension erupted in the Ogolonto area of Ikorodu, Lagos State, after a fatal road accident involving a Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) vehicle and a commercial motorcyclist reportedly triggered an angry reaction from residents, leading to the burning of the bus.
The incident, which occurred on Friday, October 16, 2026, reportedly resulted in the death of the motorcyclist, while the situation quickly escalated as an agitated crowd gathered at the scene.
According to reports, some members of the crowd set the BRT bus on fire following the collision. The development created panic in the area and raised concerns about the safety of road users and public transport operators.
The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service reportedly received a distress call at about 10:21 a.m. and dispatched firefighters to the scene. The fire service subsequently brought the blaze under control.
Reports also indicated that the BRT driver was rescued following the incident and received medical attention. However, further details about the driver’s condition were not immediately available.
As of the time of filing this report, the identity of the deceased motorcyclist and the precise circumstances that led to the collision had not been fully established.
The incident has renewed concerns about road safety and the growing danger of mob violence following traffic accidents. Although the loss of life in a road crash is deeply regrettable, setting vehicles ablaze and attacking drivers can lead to additional injuries, destruction of property and further loss of life.
Residents and road users have been urged to allow law enforcement agencies to investigate accidents and establish responsibility rather than resorting to violence.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision and determine whether anyone will face charges in connection with the burning of the BRT vehicle.
