A disturbing video showing retired Major General Rabe Abubakar and his wife in captivity has surfaced online, raising fresh concerns over their safety following their abduction in Katsina State.The retired army officer, who previously served as Directorof Defence Information at the Defence Headquarters, wasreportedly kidnapped alongside his wife while travellingthrough the Matazu area of Katsina State.
In the footage, which has circulated widely on social media and among security stakeholders, the couple appeared visibly distressed as they appealed for assistance and pleaded for their freedom. The video marks the first visual evidence of their condition since news of their abduction became public.
Reports indicate that the couple was filmed at an undisclosed location believed to be within a forest hideout. Armed men were reportedly present during the recording, while the victims spoke under apparent pressure.
Security sources familiar with the development disclosed that the video may be part of ongoing efforts by the kidnappers to strengthen negotiations. There are also claims that a notorious bandit leader known as Kachalla Maha may be linked to discussions surrounding the hostages’ release.
Unconfirmed information circulating within local security circles suggests that the abductors are seeking the release of some detained associates in exchange for freeing the retired general and his wife.
The incident follows earlier reports that the former military spokesperson and his spouse were ambushed by gunmen while travelling in the state. Their driver reportedly survived the attack despite sustaining gunshot wounds, while the vehicle used by the victims was later recovered by security personnel.
As of the time of this report, neither the Nigerian military nor the Katsina State Police Command has released an official statement regarding the latest video or the current status of the victims.
Katsina State continues to face persistent security challenges linked to armed banditry, with frequent cases of kidnapping, attacks on motorists, and violent raids on rural communities. The emergence of the latest video has intensified public concern over the activities of criminal groups operating across the North-West region and the fate of those held in captivity.
Authorities are yet to provide further updates on efforts being made to secure the safe release of Major General Abubakar and his wife.
